    How to read this list

    Each card is one report. The heading tells you where it is, usually as a pair of junctions, and which way it affects. The text underneath says what has been reported — a closed lane, a broken-down vehicle, a closure for works — and how long it is expected to last.

    A report that says "between Junction 9 and Junction 10" covers the stretch past Bicester and Cherwell Valley services. If you are not sure where a junction is, the M40 junction list gives every number with the towns it serves.

    Where the reports come from

    Reports come from National Highways, which runs the M40. The list is refreshed through the day. It shows what has been reported; an event that has not yet been logged will not appear, so an empty list means nothing reported that we are aware of, not a promise about the road.

    If you only use part of the M40, each of our stretch pages carries the reports for its own junctions alongside the facts about that part of the road: Beaconsfield and High Wycombe, the Chilterns, Oxford, Bicester and Banbury, Gaydon and Leamington and Warwick to the M42.

    Most M40 journeys start or finish on another motorway. Coming from the orbital, check M25 Traffic for the stretch around Junction 16, where the two roads meet.
