    Why the M40 closes at night

    Some planned work needs a whole carriageway or slip road shut, and closures like that are usually booked for the night, when fewer people are travelling. With the M40 carrying up to 136,403 vehicles a day at its busiest point in 2025, the night is when a closure affects the fewest drivers.

    A closure between two junctions usually means leaving at one and rejoining at the next, following the signed diversion. On the M40 some junctions are well spaced — through the Chilterns and in rural Warwickshire, for example — so check where the diversion takes you.

    What each entry tells you

    Times are as published. Work can finish early or run on, so check again close to the time you travel.

    Slip-road closures at the key junctions

    A slip-road closure can matter as much as a main-carriageway one if it is your exit. Look out for entries at the junctions that link the M40 to other major routes: Junction 1A for the M25, Junction 4 for the A404, Junction 8 for the A40 into Oxford, Junction 9 for the A34, Junction 10 for the A43 and Junction 15 for the A46. If your usual slip road is shut, the list shows which junction the diversion uses.

    Closures on the roads either end

    A closure on the M25 near Junction 16, or on the M42 near Junction 3A, can matter as much as one on the M40 itself. M25 Traffic and M42 Traffic carry the same kind of overnight list for those roads.
