Junction 14 to 15 is the busiest stretch of the M40 outside Buckinghamshire, at 113,433 vehicles a day, with the A46 carrying traffic on to Coventry and Stratford. At the M42 interchange the Department for Transport counts the two link roads separately, at 51,574 and 47,908 a day.
Active Traffic Management
Active Traffic Management is used on the approach to the M42 at the northern end of the M40. The overhead signs there can set the speed limit and open or close lanes; see M40 speed limits now and M40 overhead signs.
The first Birmingham section
Construction of the northern M40 began at Warwick in October 1987. The 12-mile section between the M42 and Warwick opened in December 1989, a little over a year before the rest of the extension was finished.
