    Kinds of roadworks you may see on the M40

    Overnight closures. Short jobs that need the whole carriageway shut, usually between late evening and early morning. These are also on M40 closures tonight.

    Lane closures. One or more lanes coned off for a shift, with traffic kept moving in the rest.

    Longer schemes. Work that stays in place for weeks, often with narrow lanes and a temporary speed limit. A roadworks speed limit is enforced like any other; the speed limits page lists the ones in force.

    Why the heavy end matters

    The Department for Transport’s 2025 figures show the M40 carrying 136,403 vehicles a day between the M25 and Beaconsfield, and 133,167 between Beaconsfield and High Wycombe. On stretches that busy, even a single lane closure can slow traffic, so works there are worth checking before you set off.

    Further north the road is quieter but carries more lorries as a share of traffic. Between Banbury and Gaydon, Junctions 11 to 12, lorries are 12.3% of all vehicles — the highest share on the M40. See M40 lorry and freight traffic.

    Works near the service areas

    Three of the four M40 service areas — Beaconsfield at Junction 2, Oxford at Junction 8A and Cherwell Valley at Junction 10 — are reached from a junction. Works or a slip-road closure at one of those junctions can affect access to the services as well as to the towns.     Each entry gives the junctions, the direction, what is closed and the planned dates. Where National Highways gives an end time, it is shown as published, with a rough countdown worked out from it.
